A south London mosque is at the centre of allegations it helped promote of acts of terror and hate in Pakistan.

Leaflets circulating in Pakistan calling for the murder of members of the Ahmadi Muslim sect directed readers to a website naming Stockwell Mosque.

The website mentioned on the leaflets in turn advised people with queries to contact the mosque in Stockwell.

Angry trustees at the mosque said its name had been misused and it had no links to the Pakistani organisation.

Trustee Toaha Qureshi said: "We don’t have any linkage with this organisation which is promoting hate."

Minority communities in Pakistan have become targets of intense discrimination and even assassination.

A full scale assault by Jihadi gunmen on an Ahmadi mosque in Lahore in May 2010 left 93 people dead and a whole community terrorised.

The Ahmadis’ beliefs are at theological odds with Islam and it has been a source of conflict for decades.

Seeking asylum

The Ahmadis have a display to "martyrs" at their international headquarters in Merton, south London.

Leaders of that community claim support from British Muslims is fostering a campaign of hate in Pakistan. They say as a result more people are arriving in London seeking asylum.

Dr Hamidullah Rehmatullah Mughal was a prominent dentist and elder in the Ahmadi community of Faisalabad. His family believe he was targeted by militants trying to cleanse Pakistan of religious opponents.

He was murdered in a sectarian killing shortly after the Lahore bombings.

His family say it was his desire to build a mosque for the Ahmadi community that brought him into conflict with Mullahs who are supported by the Pakistani Taliban.

His daughters Asifa and Zahida, along with their mother, have claimed they needed to go into hiding for several months and they have now sought asylum in the UK.

It is not only Ahmadis who are targeted by Jihadis in Pakistan but since the armed attack on the Lahore mosque, threats are said to have intensified against this community.

In London, too, hostilities have burst into the open. In Tooting last year a public campaign to boycott Ahmadi businesses was only halted after the intervention of local MPs and community leaders.

‘Spread panic’

In the latest escalation in July leaflets were circulated in Faisalabad calling on ordinary Muslims to murder Ahmadis and attack their businesses.

The leaflet was handed out in several markets in the city and, according to local lawyer Muzaffar Ahmad Zafar, it spread panic.

It was this leaflet that directed readers to the Khatme Nubuwwat (KN) organisation’s website.

KN is a perfectly legitimate group which defends the traditional interpretation of Islam. In this case the website advised that all overseas queries should be directed to the Stockwell mosque.

It is the fear among Ahmadis that support from London Muslims is making matters worse in Pakistan.

Prominent Ahmadi Pakistani and Supreme Court Lawyer Muji ur Rehman suggests many British Muslims are "carrying fundamentalist ideology from here (London) back to Pakistan, when instead we would expect them to come with their liberalism instead".

BBC London approached the trustees of the Stockwell mosque to ask if they supported the call for murder in the leaflets and why they appeared to be associated with this type of hate literature.

Mr Qureshi, a senior trustee brought in to rehabilitate the mosque after it was taken over by radicals at the time of 9/11, has expressed his anger that they have been associated in any way with the leaflet.

‘Increasing violence’

He said: "We are very angry, this is why we have contacted the authorities in Pakistan that our name is falsely being used."

Although neither Mr Qureshi nor BBC London could verify who had produced the leaflet in Pakistan, Mr Qureshi promised to make strenuous efforts to have Stockwell Mosque’s name removed from the KN website.

Within three days of speaking to BBC London that happened.

Mr Qureshi said that when he had contacted the people responsible for the website they insisted the mosque’s name would not reappear.

Evidence in Pakistan points to increasing violence against various minority groups. The Ahmadis are clearly not alone in that regard.

Making sure that intolerance does not spread to the capital remains a priority for London’s Ahmadi community.

Jattwala, District Lodhran: Ahmadiyya community in Jattwala, district Lodhran intended to build a place for their worship. Ali Hasan, a member of Lashkr-e-Taiba (a religious outfit banned for its terrorist activities), filed an application in the District Superintendent Police Office to stop its construction. The SHO came to the site on the order of his superiors and ordered a stop to the construction and told both the parties to report to him in the police station the next day. There, Ahmadis agreed that they would build only a hall for community functions and provide no niche and minarets. Their opponents agreed to this, and the police allowed the construction.

Later on, some mullahs (clerics) and press reporters came to the site again and started making hue and cry that a mosque was under construction. They gathered approximately 500 men and were about to demolish the construction but were dissuaded by some notables of the area from doing that. A delegation of mullahs and press reporters met the District Coordination Officer and put further pressure on him to demolish the Ahmadiyya hall. The DCO succumbed to their pressure tactics and ordered the Tehsil Municipal Officer to demolish the construction forthwith. The police came to the site and demolished the building.More than 60% construction on the double storey building had been completed when it was torn down.

Some press reporters and television teams came to the site and recorded the statements of agitating clerics. They expressed satisfaction over the co-operation of authorities in the demolition of the Ahmadiyya mosque and vowed to demolish the Ahmadiyya mosque in Lodhran city as “it had become a place of terrorist activities”.

Ahmadis in Adaa Zakheera, Kahroar Pakka, Dunyapur, Lodhran and Qutubpur live in fear of death threats by Ahle-Sunnat wal Jamaat members.

Lajna Imaillah (organization of Ahmadi women 15 years and above) collected 1.7 million Euros for the Berlin Mosque of which 400,000 Euros were donated by Lajna UK. If this amount was to be converted in Pakistani currency it comes up to approximately 19 Karore (190 million).

Huzur said all praise belongs to Allah that one drop of His shower of blessings has materialised in the form of Khadija Mosque, the first mosque in the eastern part of the country. Berlin has its own significance. The history of the Community in the country and in particular this city is eighty six years old. Ahmadi missionaries had come here in the era of Hadhrat Khalifatul Masih II (may Allah be pleased with him). Their reports viewed the German nation as having a sense of compliance that paid attention to understand true Islam.

In 1922 Hadhrat Khalifatul Masih II (may Allah be pleased with him) had Maulwi Mubarak Ali Bangali sahib transferred from the London mission to Berlin. In 1923 Hadhrat Khalifatul Masih II (may Allah be pleased with him) sent Malik Ghulam Farid sahib to Berlin to assist Maulwi Mubarak sahib.

Huzur said Ahmadi ladies should be mindful in particular that the sacrifice they have made will truly be of benefit when they will continue to try and derive beneficence from it and they will only be successful in their efforts when they will bring up their children in accordance with it. Huzur drew attention of men to the favor of ladies on them of building a mosque. Men would only be able to repay this favor if they honored the dues of the mosque.

Huzur said that with the grace of Allah the French Jama’at has been enabled to build their first ever mosque. May Allah make this mosque a strong foundation for building further mosques which may not have any legal impediments and may the members of the Jama’at be also infused with a spirit of sacrifice to build more mosques.

Huzur said the construction of this mosque has certainly proven that if one is resolute Allah removes impediments in the fullness of time.

Many centuries ago Muslims came to France through Spain but they faced difficulties. Huzur said materialism had become the dominant factor for them and they had to retreat. However the weapon of love, affection and prayers that the Messiah of Muhammad (peace and blessings of Allah be on him) has been given is a most purposeful weapon and wins hearts and can never be turned away and its effect is life-infusing.
