On 28th May 2010 two mosques belonging to the Ahmadiyya Muslim Jamaat in Lahore were attacked by terrorists. The mosques were the Baitul Nur Mosque in Model Town and the Darul Zikr Mosque in Ghari Shahu.

In a meticulously planned attack, sectarian terrorists carried out a slaughter of Ahmadi worshippers who had gathered for Friday prayers.Absence of any effective police presence enabled them to succeed in their gory operation, as planned. 94 worshippers died and 125 were injured. The dead include Judge (R) Munir Ahmad Sheikh, the Amir of the Lahore Ahmadiyya community, Major General (R) Nasir Ahmad, president of the Model Town chapter, Mr Mahmud Shad, a missionary, Mr Ejaz Nasrulla, a nephew of Late Sir Muhammad Zafrullah Khan, former President of the International Court of Justice at Den Haag, Mr Muhammad Aslam Bharwana, a senior railway official and a number of community officials.

THE ATTACK

The attacks were timed to be simultaneous. Two or three attackers targeted the Model Town mosque while a larger contingent attacked the bigger Garhi Shahu mosque. The terrorists killed or injured the few community guards and stormed the main assembly halls. When inside, the attackers used hand grenades and sprayed bullets indiscriminately on the worshippers. At Garhi Shahu they availed plenty of time to expend their ammunition. Many more casualties occurred when they blew themselves up.

The police arrived in due course and apparently took their time to ensure a safe and smooth intervention. As a result, little timely rescue and evacuation efforts were made which resulted in death of many injured due to bleeding. According to media reports two police officers were injured slightly at the initial stage at the Garhi Shahu site.

Two terrorists were apprehended by Ahmadi youth in Model Town mosque, stopping them from blowing themselves up. This contained the damage. They were handed over to the police.

According to press reports, three heads of suicide bombers were recovered from the Garhi Shahu mosque.

THE BURIAL

Most of the dead, when alive, had opted to be buried in Rabwah, therefore soon after the attack, over 90 graves were dug up in the town’s graveyard. The dead were buried after their funeral prayers in groups. The program of a joint big burial ceremony was abandoned for security concerns.

Rabwah wears a sad look. Markets, trade centres and shops remained closed, as the dead bodies kept arriving from Lahore. Funeral ceremonies still continue.

THE AFTERMATH

3 Days After the attack on the Mosques in Lahore Pakistan, Attackers stormed the Jinnah Hospital where doctors were treating the injured from the Mosque attacks on Friday, the attack on Jinnah Hospital left 6 dead authorities believe it the attackers attempted to free the militant who was being treated there.

INSPIRATIONAL MURDER

Just days after the Lahore attacks another Ahmadi, Mr Nehmatullah of District Narowal, Pakistan was today martyred due to being an Ahmadi. It appears that this pre-meditated murder was directly inspired by the Lahore attacks. He was attacked with a knife and died soon after.

One of the sons of Mr Nehmatullah recognised the assailant as he tried to flee and thus the assailant also attacked him with a knife. The son of Mr Nehmatullah survived and has been moved to a hospital where he is being treated. The extent of his injuries is not yet known.

The village in which the deceased lived is populated with three Ahmadi families. After hearing recently in a Friday sermon that Ahmadis were ‘Wajibul Qatl’ the assailant was allegedly openly preaching that he would murder Ahmadis. The term ‘Wajibul Qatl’ is being used increasingly in Pakistan in regard to Ahmadis and translates as deserving to be killed.

Following the Lahore attacks on Friday the assailant also allegedly said openly that he would personally make sure that no Ahmadi was left alive in his village.

THE AFTEFFECT

This incident shows again that Ahmadis are facing a time of great uncertainty and danger in Pakistan. The International Community and Media are all urged to take action to help safeguard and protect the lives of Ahmadi Muslims

The community, however, did not take to the street, take out processions or stage a protest in Rabwah. It is not the practice with Ahmadis. Instead, they have turned to God and continue to pray for themselves and the countrymen in general. They were guided by a statement from their supreme leader, the Khalifa tul Masih V: “The Ahmadiyya Muslim Jamaat is a peace loving true Muslim Jamat. Thus there will be no improper reaction from any Ahmadi. Our salvation lies in our supplication to God Almighty and we believe that He has, and always will, help us”.

As for the terrorists, Tehrik Taliban Punjab has claimed the responsibility. It is confirmed by those who survived the massacre in Garhi Shahu that the terrorists faced no resistance from the police during their attack, and had sufficient time to even examine the dead bodies in the main hall and kill those who were still alive. They shouted slogan of Khatme Nabuwat Zinda bad, (Long live End of Prophethood). According to eye witnesses, four of them managed to escape after the carnage.

The federal government and human rights concerns have confirmed that the provincial government had been informed of terrorist threat to the Ahmadiyya community. The Ahmadiyya headquarters had kept the provincial and federal governments regularly informed of the activities and open threats of the anti-Ahmadiyya clerics, and warned against the sort of tragedy that eventually materialized in Lahore.

Almost a month ago the Governor of Punjab made a public statement that the province is on knife-edge as extremists take hold, and he accused politicians of backing banned groups as minorities suffer violence and intimidation. The Federal Interior Minister also said that his ministry had warned the Punjab government of possible terrorist attacks.

Rabwah Arrest

Five days thereafter, the people of Rabwah caught a man red-handed who was carrying a great deal of arms, ammunition and hand grenades in the town. They placed him in the custody of the police.

Pakistan High Commissioner to the UK offers offers condolences with head of Ahmadiyya Jamaat

Pakistan’s High Commissioner to the UK, Mr Wajid Shamsul Hasan visited His Holiness, Hadhrat Mirza Masroor Ahmad at the Fazl Mosque in London on 2nd June 2010 to offer his condolences for the terrorist attacks that took place at two Ahmadi Mosques in Lahore on May 28.

During the forty minute meeting the prevailing political situation in Pakistan was discussed. His Holiness commented that all the attacks taking place in Pakistan were a direct result of mixing religion with politics. He expressed a hope that some leaders in Pakistan would stand up to the fanatical extremists who were the cause of so much pain and suffering in the country.

Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) member of National Assembly from Layyah has instigated the local people to observe a protest today (Tuesday) against four teenagers and a man belonging to the Ahmadiyya community arrested on the charges of blasphemy, a rights body said on Monday.

The accused will be brought before a court today. A press release issued on Monday by the Asian Human Rights Commission (AHRC) stated that some radical groups had announced a show of strength against Ahmadis to pressurize the court not to grant bail to the five Ahmadis.

The accused were arrested on January 28 on charges of writing blasphemous comments in a mosque toilet. They were shifted to Dera Ghazi Khan Central Jail, where the fundamentalist groups had asked other inmates to ‘fix up’ the Ahmadis, according to the statement. The commission urged the Punjab government to stop the violent campaign.

It is with great regret that the Ahmadiyya Muslim Jamaat confirms that five members of its community residing in Chak 172/TDA, District Layyah, Pakistan have been arrested and charged under Section 295-C of the Pakistani Penal Code. In a grave blow to any standards of decency, four of the accused are children studying at the English language ‘Superior Academy’ private school. Under the terms of Section 295-C any person found guilty is subject to either the death penalty or life imprisonment.

The four accused children are Muhammad Irfan, Tahir Imran, Tahir Mahmood and Naseeb Ahmad.are between 14 and 16. Mr Mubashar Ahmad, aged 50, has also been arrested under section 295-C.

All five were taken into custody on 28 January 2009 . After four hours in custody each of the accused was charged under the terms of section 295-C on the completely false grounds that they had written the name of the Holy Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) on the walls of a toilet at the Jamia Gulzar-e-Medina Mosque.

Asma Jahangir, the chairwoman of the Human Rights Commission of Pakistan (HRCP), said that it was heinous to use the law against children. The HRCP was finding facts about the incident, she said, and would soon send a team to Layyah while Religious scholar Javed Ghamidi said the children were safer in police custody.

Mr Salim-ud-Din, Spokesperson for the Ahmadiyya Muslim Jamaat in Pakistan said:

“These allegations are completely false and baseless. The police have no evidence whatsoever and have merely succumbed to the pressure of those who spread religious hatred in the region.”

It is of note that none of the persons arrested have any connection to the Gulzar-e-Medina Mosque and they do not live anywhere near it.

The Asian Human Rights Commission has stated:

“Family members were told (by the District Police Officer) that the police were under pressure from fundamentalists to act against the children. If he did not arrest them, the group had threatened to close down the whole city and attack the houses of Ahmadi sect members… The AHRC urges the government of President Asif Zardari to immediately release the illegally detained prisoners.”

The charge laid against the five Ahmadis is completely without foundation. The Ahmadiyya Muslim Jamaat reveres the Holy Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) as the final law bearing prophet, who brought with him a universal teaching. No disrespect towards him could ever be tolerated by any Ahmadi; man, woman or child. The Founder of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Jamaat, Hadhrat Mirza Ghulam Ahmad wrote:

“The man who in his being and his attributes and his actions and through his spiritual and holy faculties set an example of perfection and was called the perfect man was Muhammad (peace be upon him).”

The Ahmadiyya Muslim Jamaat urges the immediate release of the five persons imprisoned and for all charges to be dropped. In a country which seeks to promote an image of tolerance to the Western world, it speaks volumes that peace loving children have been charged with an offence that sanctions the death penalty as a sentence.

The International Community, Media and Human Rights organizations are all urged to take action to secure the release of all of the accused in this matter. In an era where freedom of religion and belief is accepted as a basic human right throughout the world it is of disbelief that anti-Ahmadiyya legislation is still active and indeed still being so cruelly enforced in Pakistan.

Actions

Please raise awareness of this issue by writing to your local MP, newspaper editors and authorities in Pakistan. This is further evidence of how democracy & justice in Pakistan is bowing & succumbing to extremist fundamentalists. Even the chairwoman of the Human Rights Commission of Pakistan and Special Rapporteur of the United Nations Commission on Human Rights has condemned this act.

The government has decided to construct Rabwah Dam (Chiniot Dam) between Chiniot and Rabwah on Chenab River at a cost of Rs 23.59 billion, to store water for irrigation and electricity generation this Dam Plan has been in writing for a decade or so but no progress was made until now !

The announcement was made at a meeting of WAPDA, NESPAK and the Irrigation Department lead by senior Minister Raja Riaz Ahmad in Chiniot on Thursday. This will produce up to 256 giga watt hours (GWH) of hydropower electricity and it will be able to store water for cultivation of around 26.4 thousand tons of wheat. The water in the dam would have a value of around Rs 2.92 billion and the power generated will have a round about value of Rs 0.92 billion. The project report of Rabwah Dam (Chiniot Dam) is ready to be submitted to the federal government.

It is said that the dam would have a barrage capacity of 1 million cusecs and a storage capacity of 1.29 million acre feet (MAF). The total length of the dykes will be 44 miles with a height of 39 feet. The ‘environment and rehabilitation cost’ of the dam has been estimated at Rs 5.2 billion, but we wonder if they will actually be applied for this purpose ! while Rs 5.1 billion would be spent on setting up a powerhouse.

Irrigation Department experts said Chenab River’s embankments would be reinforced up to Pindi Bhattian for protection against floods.

The Head of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Jamaat, Hadhrat Mirza Masroor Ahmad arrived in India on 23 November 2008 just after 4.40am. His Holiness had departed from London Heathrow in the early evening of 22nd November boarding a British Airways flight to Indira Gandhi International Airport in Delhi.

His Holiness was met at the plane by various officials of Sadr Anjuman Ahmadiyya India including the Chief Executive, Muhammad Inam Ghori, the Chairman, Dr Saleh Muhammad Aladdin and Nasim Khan the Secretary for External. Following arrival, His Holiness was led to the Ceremonial Lounge of the Airport. This Lounge is reserved for National and International Dignitaries. It is variously used to entertain the Prime Minister of India, the President of India and Foreign Leaders.

Whilst in the Ceremonial Lounge it became apparent that the time for the Fajr prayer was approaching. Therefore His Holiness instructed that the prayer be offered in the Lounge itself and thus he led the Fajr prayer before departing for the Delhi Mosque at 6.20am. The convoy arrived at the Bait‐ul‐Haadi Mosque in Delhi at 6.55am where they were greeted by the local Missionary, Maulana Kalim‐ud‐Din and hundreds of members of the local Jamaat. As His Holiness emerged from his car, members began raising slogans of joy whilst the Ahmadi children sang poems welcoming His Holiness.

Later in the day the members of the local Delhi Jamaat were granted the honor of meeting His Holiness. During these meetings members requested prayers and expressed their joy to His Holiness upon his arrival in India.

Khilafat Centenary celebrations continue as UK Member of Parliament hosts celebratory event at Westminster.

In an historic event at the Houses of Parliament, the Head of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Jamaat, Hadhrat Mirza Masroor Ahmad was yesterday invited to address a number of senior members of Government, Parliamentarians and Ambassadors as Justine Greening MP, hosted a reception in celebration of the Khilafat Centenary, which is the system of spiritual leadership that unites Ahmadi Muslims around the world.

The event was attended by over 30 MPs including Rt Hon Hazel Blears MP, Secretary of State for Communities & Local Government; Dominic Grieve MP, the Shadow Home Secretary; Simon Hughes MP, the President of the Liberal Democrats; Gillian Merron MP, the Foreign Office Minister and Lord Eric Avebury who gave the vote of thanks. The event was sponsored by Justine Greening MP, in whose constituency the first Ahmadi Mosque built in the UK, the ‘Fazl Mosque’, is based.

During her welcome address, Justine Greening MP, spoke of how the Fazl Mosque had played a key and vital role in the local community ever since it was built back in 1924. She said that it was indeed a privilege for her that the Headquarters of the Jamaat was based in her constituency. Her comments were echoed by Gillian Merron MP, the newly appointed Foreign Office Minister. She said it was a great honour to meet with the Head of the Jamaat and to be able to mark the Centenary of Khilafat. She said that the work of the Jamaat was crucial because it ‘gave a voice to those who are marginalized. Commenting upon the continued persecution of Ahmadi Muslims in various countries she singled out Pakistan and Indonesia as countries where the situation appeared to be worsening. She said that the Foreign Office was
committed to effecting the safeguarding of Human Rights in all countries.

Hadhrat Mirza Masroor Ahmad, the Head of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Jamaat, used his address to speak about a number of contemporary issues that were affecting the peace of society both in the UK and the world at large. He also spoke about the role of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Jamaat which he said was as the ‘standard bearer and true representative of Islam’. He said members of the Jamaat who lived in the UK were all completely loyal to the country because this was the teaching of the Founder of Islam, the Holy Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him).

His Holiness began his address by speaking of the great conflict that divided the world today. Wars were being fought in different parts of the world. He worried of even greater problems. He said:

“It is my fear that in view of the direction in which things are moving today, the political and economic dynamics of the countries of the world may lead to world war… Therefore, it is the duty of the superpowers to sit down and find a solution to save humanity from the brink of disaster.”

He said that the only way to avert further hostilities and disputes was for all Governments to act justly with their own people and in their dealings with other countries. He congratulated the British Government for having shown such qualities of fairness in its recent history. He cited its rule of pre‐partition India as an example of its quality of fairness. Only if similar policies were adopted throughout the world could catastrophe be averted.

Turning towards ‘terrorism’ he said that no form of terror or violence was sanctioned in Islam and thus those who justified their heinous acts in its name were causing for the world to be distrustful and even hateful of the religion of Islam. As a consequence of this hate, certain non‐Muslim groups or individuals had taken it upon themselves to attack Islam by defaming the character of the Holy Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) and the Holy Qur’an. Such acts he stated could never be right and that a mutual respect for all religions and beliefs was necessary for true peace to emerge.

His Holiness then discussed crime in society. He said Islam’s true teachings were to try and reform those who had done wrong. Revenge and retribution ought never to enter into the equation when debating the punishment of criminals or prisoners of war. Crime also had to be fought at its root cause which was the development of an unjust society. Thus countries had to be free to develop and cultivate their own natural resources without the fear of other more powerful nations exploiting them and this was just as true at an individual level. This was the way forward. He said:

“Those countries that have been endowed with mineral resources should be allowed to develop and trade at fair prices and under open skies and one country should benefit from the resources of the other country. So, this would be the right way, the way that is preferred by God Almighty.”

Finally, His Holiness spoke of the current economic crisis that engulfed the entire world. He said the ‘credit crunch’ ought to be taken as a warning that the western system of interest based capitalism was wholly incompatible with a fair and just society. He said that though interest could appear to increase a person’s capital, in the long term this was never true.

Following the keynote address of His Holiness various other MPs took to the stage. Hazel Blears MP spoke of how she had greatly admired the keynote address which she had found to be ‘pertinent, contemporary and challenging’. She said that the speech that had just been delivered was the type of speech that was rarely delivered by politicians because it was so cogent and clear to the point. The Jamaat’s message of ‘Love for All, Hatred for None’ was as important as it was simple because it was a message that led to unity rather than division. She further mentioned how she brought with her the best wishes of the Prime Minister, Gordon Brown who had personally sent her to attend the event.

A regular at events hosted by the Ahmadiyya Muslim Jamaat, Dominic Grieve MP, said he took great pleasure at finally being able to host the Jamaat. He praised the Jamaat for its ‘wonderful contribution in all aspects of life’ which he said was due to its policy of integration rather than exclusion. He too said that he took great pride in the fact that the Headquarters of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Jamaat were in London. Simon Hughes MP said that the plight of the Jamaat in various countries illustrated the point that religious freedom had not yet been achieved and that the Government had to work towards bringing about such freedoms in all countries.

The event was concluded by a vote of thanks given by Lord Eric Avebury who spoke of how the keynote address had ‘underlined the moral dimension that we must all follow’. This His Holiness had done by speaking of both conflict prevention and conflict solution. Lord Avebury then spoke of the continued persecution of Ahmadis in Pakistan and said that organizations such as Khatme‐Nabuwat perpetrated hatred against Ahmadis in such a way that people here in the UK could never understand. He concluded by thanking His Holiness for his ‘wise words of wisdom’.

Following the event Hadhrat Mirza Masroor Ahmad was given a guided tour of the Houses of Parliament and held private audiences with Nick Clegg MP, the Leader of the Liberal Democrats and Lord Bishop Nazir Ali.
